J. Brown, born John Brown in Detroit, Michigan, is an American singer and
songwriter. Growing up as the youngest of five children, he found his passion
for music early on, singing in his father's church choir. Brown's musical tastes
were shaped by iconic artists like Usher, Jay-Z, Jimi Hendrix, Nas, and Sting
and during his high school days, Brown, along with Robert Curry and two other
singers, formed the group E2G. They were signed to Clef Records/J Records after
auditioning for Wyclef Jean of the Fugees, but the group eventually disbanded.
