Hailing from Los Angeles, California, the hip hop ensemble Funkdoobiest was formed in 1989 by Jason Vasquez (also known as "Son Doobie"), Tyrone Pacheco (also known as "Tomahawk Funk"), and DJ Ralph Medrano (also known as "Tha Phunky Mexican" and "DJ Ralph M"). All three members were also participants in Soul Assassins, a collective of hard-edged rappers overseen by Cypress Hill's DJ Muggs.
